The ''Van Buren Avengers'' were an Arkansas Militia raised to support The US Army during The Mexican American War (1846-1848). The Militia was commanded by The 4th Governor of that State, John Selden Roane. Neither he nor his junior Officers had any Military training and were more ''brag'' that ''bite''. The Militia fought at The Battle of Buena Vista in 1847 and were nearly decimated by Mexican Lancers.

Named for Van Buren County in Arkansas, The Avengers Flag was a variant of The US National Colors. This consisted of a Field of (6) Red Stripes and (7) White Stripes. In the Upper Left Canton nearest The Hoist, the traditional Blue Field was given a light Blue Field. The then 28 Stars used to represent The separate States were Black in colors and arranged in a circular pattern similar to Colonial Revolutionary versions. (8) of the 28 Stars were arranged in a smaller circular pattern within the larger circle. In the lower Canton Field was placed in Black lettering the words ''Try Us''. The Flag survived The War and was eventually given to The State. It is currently on display in The State Capitol Museum in Little Rock.
