Deployed late in World War II (1944), The ''Trench'' – Class Submarine USS ''Pickerel'' was deployed to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. She saw no War Service in that Conflict. Remaining with The Pacific Fleet, ''Pickerel'' would be the first US Navy Submarine to be deployed to The Korean War (1950). After brief Service, She returned to Pearl Harbor and served as a Training Ship. The majority of Her ''Cold War''' Service was in The Pacific.

Serving until 1971 as a Fleet Escort and Protection Ship, ''Pickerel'' was deemed ineligible for the extensive modernization needed for Her to remain Active. ''Pickerel'' would be sold to The Italian Navy (1977) and was re-named ''Volador''. She would continue in that Nation's service until 1981 (when she was stricken and scrapped).

In Her US Wartime configuration, ''Pickerel'' displaced 2,400-tons and was 300-feet long with a Beam of 18-feet. Power was provided by (4) Diesel Engines which produced 33-mph (on Surface) and 23-mph submerged. She was rated to 400-feet. Crewing 85 Officers and Men, ''Pickerel''s armament included (10) 21-inch Torpedoes.
