Known collectively as The CAR-15, it was a lightweight, semi-automatic version of The AR and M16 Battle Rifle. Although designs appeared as early as 1966, it was not deployed until 1968. The CAR-15 was initially issued to American Special Operations Forces (Green Berets, SEALs, Rangers and MACV-SOG). Weighing 6-pounds and measuring 33-inches (15 of which were barrel), The CAR was a gas-operated, rotating bolt cyclic system. It was chambered for the 5.56mm NATO Round. The effective range was 400-yards. Soon, The CAR became standard for Helicopter Crews and Armor, due to it’s size and ease in deployment. Although replaced in the 20th Century, The CAR-15 is still widely used by American Law Enforcement.
