Formed in 1791, The 1st United States Infantry Regiment – is one of the oldest continuous Active Infantry Regiments of The United States Army. It was established after the initial disbandment of The Continental Army of The United States (with the conclusion of The American Revolution). The Founding Fathers of The US, did not want to imitate European Nations that maintained ''standing Armies'' (mostly as a means of intimidating their populace by a Monarchy or Government). It was soon determined that the young United States needed a ''full time'' Army (albeit small) – for self-defense (especially on The Frontier and it's problems with hostile Native Americans). The ''American Legion'' was created (of which The 1st Regiment was part of). The 1st Regiment has served in every American Conflict and War since 1791, earning an impressive 39 Battle Streamers for it's Colors. Deactivated several times, it was redesignated The 172nd Styker Brigade for The War on Terrorism in 2005.
The original Colors of The 1st Regiment also set the motif for future Regimental Colors used by The US Army (which would be used until 1918). The Field was Blue in color. Centered, was placed a full colored representation of The National Symbol of The Bald Eagle. Behind the bird was a Golden Cloud. Below him – was a Gray billowing cloud. In the upper Canton (Left and next to The Hoist), was placed a Laurel Wreath of Green, into which was placed The Regimental Identifier ''US 1st Reg.t''
