In simple terms, to “Trick” in Heraldry involves the initial making of a Coat of Arms. So as not to become confused with the many different tinctures used (and needed), “Tricking” was the substitution of Color identifiers on a sketch (Letters), with Numbers (or to “trick”). This method was found to make the painting of Arms more easier. There was no set formula developed and each Arms Maker (or House), had their own style and “Code”.
