Another improvised device, this was simply a stick (or related type wooden or metal handle). Attached to the end was a large metal can (suitable to hold a small Ball Grenade. A wooden or metal slat was hinged to the open end (with a string attached). By pulling the string the slat would open. The soldier would place the grenade (activation pin removed), inside the can (which was now secured by the can's dimensions). The “trick” was to stand in the protection of one's Trench and (in an overhand throw) - “launch and release” the Grenade towards one's enemy! The device was a way of throwing a Grenade without exposing one to direct enemy retaliation.
