The term Supporter is quite that. On a Coat of Arms, the Mythical Beasts often portrayed were shown in an upright position (known as an Attribute). These figures would in turn “hold up” the other images in “support” (as with a Pillar). In most cases, the animals were used – but in some cases actual Pillars or shapes could be used (in cases of Lesser Lords).
