Similar in use to Abatement, a “Stain” on a Coat of Arms was just that. Peerage in “Stain” would have a darker wash applied to their Coats of Arms (or darker, less colorful paint schemes) – to imply a dishonor (and the phrase, “A Stain upon One's Honor”). However, in the 17th Century - “Staining” was used in numerous Livery Arms. The practice of calling a “Stain” a dishonor ended (in terms of Heraldry).
