The Iron Guard was a paramilitary organization raised in Romania to support a Fascist political takeover of that Country. It came into existence in 1927. The growing appeal of Fascist philosophy was evident throughout many European Countries at that time. The Guard was anti-communist, anti-capitalist and anti-semitic. They fostered an Eastern Orthodox religious view. The Guard was also known as The ''Greenshirts'' for the Green colored uniform shirts and tunics that they adopted as their uniform. They also used a Green Flag which featured a Medieval Portcullis (or Gate), in black as their insignia. The Iron Guard used terror and execution to cement their political power within Romania until 1935 when they clashed with the dominate Nationalist Party. After a brief rebellion in Bucharest, the majority of The Guard was killed or captured. The Party was banned thereafter.
