Retainer

Originating from Medieval Magistrates, The Retainer was one who provided domestic, military or administrative duties – in return for his Lords protection. A Retainer need not be of Noble birth. All walks of Medieval Life could be chosen as a Retainer. Often, such “humble” persons could eventually raise themselves to “Lesser Lords”. Retainers were also educated by their Lord – taught to read and write, which was a VALUABLE commodity.
