Predominately a Russian mid to late 16th/17th Century construction design, The Ostrog was on the Blockhouse family of defensive structures. Constructed entirely out of wood, they were often not garrisoned full-time and were were used for declared military emergencies (war, invasion, rebellion etc). Combined with “mini-armories”, The Ostrog was a form of “mini Fort”. Not connected to defensive wall works or related towers, they would be built inside of permanent military structures. In later times, they would be associated with mini Prisons.
