Another early use creature, the mythical Mermaid (or Man), is depicted as having the upper half of a Human and the lower half of a Fish. Often (in the feminine), The Mermaid is “looking” at herself in a hand-held mirror. Also, the combing of her hair is also portrayed. Seen as “Vanity”, the symbol was often seen with Naval occupations. Some of the earliest representations date from the 9th Century.
