Actually a Baron, The Marcher Lord was in charge of the tracts of land that bordered a Country (England, Wales or Scotland). These areas were known as “Marches”. The Barons tasked with protecting these locations were called “Marcher Lords”. They had the ability to raise and maintain Armies for the protection and defense of these Marches (even entering into combat engagements, if needed).
