This was a financial “gift” of monies that was normally given by a Sovereign or Lord during a Tournament or Great Feast – to Royal Heralds. Although given a privileged position in a Lord's Household (clothed, given shelter and fed), Heralds were NOT paid “employees”. At these larger functions, it was “permitted” for a Herald to “announce” a Largesse. His Lord would either honor (or not), the Heralds “request”. Mostly, a Herald WAS rewarded with a Largesse – for it made his Lord look like a “caring” Ruler (which was why it done in Public!)
