Truly a first attempt to create a “hand-held” rapid fire weapon, The Kjellman Rifle was originally patented in 1870 by Swedish Inventor D.H. Friberg (a Swedish Army Officer). Incorporating the “known” mechanics of rapid fire technology with regards to weapons like The Gatling (and others), the weapon was designed to be carried by the standard infantryman in combat. Still using a blackpowder ignition system, the weapon was said to fire the 6.5mm round. The weapon was considered well too expensive to ever produce. However, Frieberg's plans would still be attempted (as late as 1907). Several working models have survived. It is a wonder to imagine IF The Swedish Government had invested in The Kjellman Rifle. It would have changed the course of Modern Warfare.
