Japanese Makibishi

These were the “cousins” to the European Caltrop anti-personnel devices. Seen in use as early as the 12th Century, The Makibishi were iron, 6-sided hand spikes. Used to “seed” a ground against enemy cavalry, they were also known to be thrown (as a weapon). Most often sharpened (to increase damage to a hoof or foot), they were used more by the standard foot soldier (than the Samurai). Several would be carried by each man in a Regiment.
