Seen around the mid-12th Century, Gurge (or Gurges) – were spherical or concentric lines that started upwards from The Chief (Top), and “spiraled down”, to the center Point of Honor of a Shield. Multi-colored, they were NOT as common as many think. It's exact meaning is unknown and is classed as a Flourishment. Gurges seem to have been popular in many Germanic Arms.
