A standard issue personal defensive weapon, The Gully was a mid-length, broad knife. Single-edged, The Gully was initially designed for the cutting of sail canvas. The blade was not normally sharpened to a point (as one would with a blade). The Gully featured a simple “S” Guard Bar and a wooden grip. Blade lengths were around 1 to 2 feet long. They would be carried in belts or boots. Most Navies and Privateers carried A Gully (or related blade).
