Grand Guards were iron, steel or related metal plates (one piece), that were affixed onto the front of a Jouster's Armor (normally on the left side). The Grand Guard could either be a form fitting affair, or an elaborate, up-sweeping piece of plating. As much as 2-inches thick, The Grand Guard was “affixed” over the upper left portion of the Breast. It provided an additional layer of protection to the heart as well. Guard Braces were not considered mandatory in use. Some were very highly decorated (some even having the Wearer's Coat of Arms engraved on them).
