Dating back as far as 1219 A.D. - as a “fighting” Order (modeled loosely on The Teutonic Order), it was made into a Noble Order in 1671. Given as a Knightly conferment, the Order is identified by a Latin Cross with Red edges. Surmounted by a Crown, the first Letter of the Awarding Monarch (or whole Cypher, in some cases), was also etched in.
