Confederate 44th Georgia Infantry Regiment

Formed in 1862, The 44^th Georgia Infantry was composed of (6) Companies equaling 600 Officers and Men. The 44^th was detached to Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, and participated in many of it's battles. The 44^th had a reputation for taking heavy casualties, mostly from infantry assaults against The Enemy. It suffered 60% casualties at The Battle of Mechanicsville (Virginia) and 40% at Gettysburg in 1863. Only 70 Officers and Men surrendered at Appomattox in 1865.
