Formed in 1862, The 44th Georgia Infantry was composed of (6) Companies equaling 600 Officers and Men. The 44th was detached to Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, and participated in many of it's battles. The 44th had a reputation for taking heavy casualties, mostly from infantry assaults against The Enemy. It suffered 60% casualties at The Battle of Mechanicsville (Virginia) and 40% at Gettysburg in 1863. Only 70 Officers and Men surrendered at Appomattox in 1865.
