The Northern State of Maryland was a "divided" State with regards to it's loyalty towards The Federal Government and The causes of The American Civil War of 1861-1865. Vast numbers of The State had Southern sympathies and in many cases were in open rebellion. Many Volunteers left The State and went to nearby Virginia to fight against The North. The 21st Virginia Infantry was one such Unit. Although a "Virginia" Regiment, they were called "The Maryland Guard". Formed in 1861, they participated in 10 Major engagements, some of which were some of the bloodiest of Civil War battles. At Gettysburg for example, The 21st fielded 236 Men. They suffered 20% casualties, resulting in only 56 survivors. The United Flag of The 21st Virginia Infantry was the "1st National Flag" of The Confederacy, known as "The Stars and Bars". This was 3 Stripes, (Red, White and Red) in the Field of The Flag. In the Upper Left Canton was a Blue Field which had 12 White Stars representing The States of The Confederacy. A 12th Star was shown that was outlined but not filled in with color. This represented the unofficial "Southern" State of Maryland.
