A popular practice in early to late Middle Ages Heraldry was the incorporation of Christian symbolism into one's Arms. These were even more varied that just a Cross. Some images may (or may not) have an implied trait or honor bestowed by The Church. Religious tincture was also very important with regards to these symbols. The “list” of known Christian symbolism and imagery is VERY long. As stated, The Cross (and it's variations) were popular (as were Angels). Another type of imagery used was “Passion Symbols” or the “Paschal Lamb”. Finally, the ancient symbol of “Chi Rho” was often used on Shields and Arms.
