Very similar in use as with Flags, a Canton on a Coat of Arms – was a small Square located on the Upper left portion of the Outer Shield. The sizing was seldom over 12 inches by 12 inches. Color and symbolism used again denoted some trait or award of the Recipient. Not all Coats of Arms have Cantons – and they are considered by some to be rare. They are seen around the 11th Century.
