Created by Queen Victoria in 1896, The Order was designed to be awarded to her Household Staff for loyal service. The Order was given to both Men and Women. Still considered active (and used today by Queen Elizabeth), The Order is seen more as a “retirement gift”. Consisting of an Maltese Cross with Queen Victoria's Royal Cypher, The Order uses “Classes” as it's Ranking structure (with 5th Class being the lowest). Traditional Knights and Dames of The Order are installed, with the Reigning Monarch as The Grand Master.
