These symbols are seen as types of borders shown on some Shields. They can be lines (solid or not), or even crenelated They were often used (depending on styling), as a way to impart dishonor or the practice of Bastardy. As time progressed with Heraldry, they became less “dishonorable” and more Artistic in nature.
