Popularized by Contemporary Painters in the mid to late 18th Century, The ''Bergere Hat'' was a female hat, noted for it's simplistic nature. Made of pressed and shaped straw, The Bergere was a medium brim with a slightly raised rear (back of the head). A very small flattened crown, the plainess of The Bergere was mostly augmented (by the wearer), with fresh flowers or herb sprigs - as well as silk or cloth ribbons. Seen as a Summer Hat, The Hat was popular among wealthier Patrons (but some Lower Class women replicated versions as well). The stlye would endure for several Centuries.
