These are Coats of Arms and Shield “claimed” by Succession, Sovereignty or Office. Actual “possession” of which is not necessary. A common example was England's King Edward III, who “claimed Title” of The French Throne from 1337. The incorporation of French Heraldry symbolism into English Arms would continue until 1801.
