These were single handed, double edged weapons, roughly 28 to 35 inches in length. Developed in the 11th Century, they were very popular during The Crusades. They were versatile cutting and stabbing weapons. With the advent of the Longsword, they still played a part in warfare - being renamed sidearms. They would evolve into the Rapiers and related blades of The Renaissance Era.
