An Ancient Chinese Nature Demon , The Yaoquai never achieve Humanity and were thus associated with Animal Spirits . However, during their Formation , they did adopt almost Human Personalities and the abilities to interact effectively with Humankind. Their name, meaning Strange Spirit , set them apart from other Elemental Demons in Chinese Culture. Said to resemble a Canine-Like beast, The Yaoquai were only able to be summoned by (and to serve) Royalty. They were invoked and honored almost as Spiritual Pets that used their magic to influence those who were contrary to their Master or Mistress will. Similar to The Japanese Oni Demons, they occupy a specific place in Hades, neither good or evil. The ultimate goal of Yaoquai worship was to have their ultimate power bestowed upon their Owner that of immortality. Some examples of Enemy Yaoquai fighting each other on their Master s behalf are also known in Ancient Chinese writings.
