Another early Colonial Legend, The Town of Middleway, West Virginia (which was part of North Virginia until the 1860s), tells a strange tale. In 1794, a Visitor was passing through The Township when he took ill. Taken to a nearby Boarding House, the Visitor (a devout Catholic) begged for a Catholic Priest and The Last Rites. The Region was devoid of Catholics, and no one wanted to search for one. As a result, the Visitor died. Apparently, the Visitor cursed his uncaring Caretakers from that point forward. Candles would fail to light, the sound of horses galloping through Town (without benefit of a real animal), these and all other manner of supernatural happenings occurred. The most unusual involved a habit of stuttering. Many in the Town spoke with a stutter or Clip . The habit only happened in Town. When one left, the Clip would stop. Although not well documented, some say the curse still manifests itself today. At one point in the 1880s, Townspeople even brought in a Priest to say prayers over the grave of the Visitor. This has not worked or perhaps not worked yet.
