Possibly from Suriname, ‘’Winti’’ is a Folk Religion which was practiced by several enslaved Peoples of The Caribbean Region. Transplanted into The American South with Slavery imports, Winti Beliefs center around water. Most of Winti’s ‘’Gods and Goddesses’’ are water dwellers. Hence, large pools of water are needed to allow such Spirits to be ‘’seen’’ and to come forth into the ‘’Physical World’’. Most of Winti Beliefs are non-violent and it was seen as a means of both Ancestor Worship and communing with deceased relatives. Variations of Winti are still practiced today in Brazil and Cuba.
