Reported around the late 19th Century (1891) in New Zealand, this creature was described as a cross between an Otter (or Beaver) and a Cat. Highly predatory, The Waitoreke was said to be as big as a Panther and quite fast. It had 4 legs with long sharp claws. The Beast has a small head with rows of sharp fangs. Said to have Brown fur with White spots, The Waitoreke was not reported to have webbed feet (despite the fact that it lived and hunted near water). The creature was claimed to have charged a group of British soldiers (who shot it). They were said to have butchered and eaten the beast (which was reported to have a sweet taste. The Waitoreke has been reported on and off (with the last lasting being in the early 1980s). No photographic proof exists.
