''The Treatsie on The Dead Smacking in Their Graves'' - Yes…This WAS a real Title to a real Book written after much examination on the ‘’Subject Matter’’. Compiled (from and earlier work) and written by German Lutheran Pastor Michael Ranft in 1734, He discovered that ‘’suspected’’ Vampires (which when examined in Their Graves), were ‘’chewing on Their Limbs as well as the fabric which was inside Their Coffins’’. Obviously trapped and unable to ‘’Hunt’’ and spread Their disease (Vampirism) at Night, this was their only recourse. Ranft went on to cite that the ‘’best method’’ to stop ‘’errant Vampire Corpses’’ from this action was to tie shut their mouth (jaw) with a binding wrap. Next, dirt was heaped under the jaw and neck – with a coin placed such. Finally, should these ‘’tricks’’ not work…..One must ram a piece of stone into the mouth (before binding). Several questions come to mind (obviously). Those recently deceased who were thought to be Vampires, had Their graves exhumed. It is unclear as to why the ‘’Good Pastor’’ (as well as Gravediggers), would not associate the ‘’chewed limbs’’ with rodents and insect life (even to the deterioration of ANY cloth inside said Casket. BUT, His ‘’Treastsie’’ was accepted as ‘’factual’’ and used (briefly) as the primary ‘’Guide’’ to dealing with Vampires in 17th and early 18th Century Germany.
