The ''Tongue Ripper'' was a rather unpleasant device which was popular during The Spanish Inquisition (Spain) – around the 15th Century. In essence a pair of “Vice Grips”, the device would be fitted onto the Victim's tongue and screwed (clamped) down. After untold hours of agony (without “Confession”), The Administrator of this torment would simply jerk the device rearward – thus ''ripping out'' the tongue of the poor Victim. Blood loss and infection would normally bring death!
