Seen in the Middle Ages, ''Thumbscrews'' were instruments quite ''effective'' in information gathering. A simple vise-like device (in various designs) - they were ring-shaped (circular). A simple turn screw with affixed plate - when turned, would apply extreme pressure and pain to the area placed (or nerve point). Some larger versions were even made for hands, legs and even ears. A popular Legend concerning a device inspired by Thumbscrews, involves Queen Elizabeth I. It was known she had long hands and thin fingers. Her Maid (so the story goes), used a similar device on her (when she was young) - to shape her fingers in a more "regal and tapered" look!
