1954s ‘’This Island Earth’’, from Universal Studios – was actually an exception to the on-rush o ‘’B’’-Movie nonsense which plagued the 1950s and 1960s (regardless of how much We love them now). Most Critics lambasted each and every ‘’entry’’. With most Sci-Fi/Horror based on the growing Public appeal for ‘’real’’ Unidentified Flying Objects, nearly ANYTHING produced made money. But ‘’This island Earth’’ was a very different Film. Filmed in Technicolor (rare for the early Genre), and had a plausible story line. It, and it’s late appearing Alien ‘’Guard-Servant’’ Monster or ‘’Metaluna Mutant’’ (as He is known), is still an iconic image of 1950s Sci-Fi and Horror. The Tale centers around a brilliant Human Scientist who receives components for His experiments to convert common lead into uranium (without Atomic Fusion). The machinery is supplied by an Alien Race called The Metalunans. At War with another hostile Race, They find that for all Ther advanced technology, only this Human scientist has found the means to win Their War. Malevolent by nature, They kidnap The Scientist. Gradually finding the uranium conversion technique too late, The Metalunans decide that perhaps THEY will integrate Their Species into Earth’s population (They look exactly like Humans). The Film’s Special Effects were seen as top notch for the Period, and ‘’This Island Earth’’ has become an iconic piece of 1950s Genre Film.
