The USS "Memphis" (SSN-691), was a Los Angeles-Class submarine, that - on March 24, 1989, was assigned to "Special" Security assignment. It's duty was to patrol off the Florida Coast while NASAs Space Shuttle was "on The Pad" (awaiting launch). Such an assignment was normal for The US Navy. What was NOT normal was what happened next! The "Memphis" was roughly 150-miles out to sea (at 500 feet), when all communications equipment suddenly malfunctioned. Even backup protocols failed. This was a situation that was NOT supposed to happen. The Submarine Commander ordered the vessel to make surface immediately. Upon arrival, a Conning Party (Ship Command), went up the ladder topside. It was raining and the sky had a Red appearance. As the Men attempted to check the Men checked the Communications array, they were shocked to see a "V-Shaped" Object hovering above the Sub. The Object appeared solid and about 1-mile in diameter. A series of lights could easily seen. The Object "circled" the Sub, and then flew off several hundred feet. It suddenly crashed into the water, with such force, that it caused tell entire Sub to "rock".

Communications immediately came back "to life". The Men on Deck were told by the Captain to not say anything to anyone until he could consult with Naval Command Authorities. The Sub was ordered back to Port (Jacksonville, Fla). The Deck Crew were taken under guard to an unspecified location on Base. They were all subjected to. 7-hour interview/debriefing. No Authorities disavowed the fact that The "Memphis" had experienced what they did. They were told to sign documents threatening them with jail. The vessel's Crew was completely re-assigned (something generally not done on Tactical Submarines). Some "brave" crewmen still came forward after they had left the Service. The rest of the story is a matter of what you believe!
