1988s ''The Unholy'' is typical 1980s Drive-In and late night Theater fare. Unlike most in the ''Demonic Possession'' genre popular since the 1970s, the film is rather good – with fare special effects for the Era. A popular Cult Film, it too deals with Demons and The Catholic Church – and it's set in New Orleans, Louisiana to boot! The film deals with a statue of The Virgin Mary which survived a complete fire within a European Church. Transported to a small American Parrish, strange things begin to happen. A series of serial killings taking on a very sexual and demonic nature begin. When the Parrish Priest is murdered in a Confession (later determined to be a Demon), The Church sends an investigator. He eventually meets a beautiful young girl who is targeted by The Demon (who it is learned resides inside the statute), for possession. After a heated battle for Her soul, our hero Priest defeats The Demon at the loss of His eyesight! As stated, typical 80s fare in the Horror genre, but actually well worth a look. Sadly, many Fans felt that the recently released 2021 film of the same name is a reboot. It borrows from the original (very lightly), but is different altogether.
