An interesting Urban Myth, The ''Skeleton Inside A Tree'' is meant to convey that – as the story goes, a group of Lumbermen were felling trees in a forest. When they cut down a particular tree, in was found to be partially hollow. Further, a Human skeleton was found inside the hollow. One is unclear IF the tree grew around and into the Skeleton, or did ''someone'' hide inside the tree hollow – got stuck and could not get out. The Origins of this tale have a slight basis in truth. We must first turn to The Northwest Indian War (1785-1795), between a young United States and The Western Confederacy of Tribes (supported tacitly by Britain and France). It was at the particular brutal Battle of The Wabash, that American Forces under Arthur St. Clair, were nearly slaughtered by Native Americas.
An American Officer managed to escape the massacre, running into the forest and climbing into the hollow of a tree (to hide). Unable to extricate himself, He supposedly starved to death inside. Decades later, Woodsmen ''found'' His remains inside. While some cite that the entirety of the tale was faked (or perhaps made into Frontier Legend), no real proof of the incident has ever been found...and neither was the final resting place of the Officer in question!
