Often overlooked by UFOlogists, The Case of US Army Private Gerry Irwin, is both odd and unexplained. Private First Class Gerry Irwin was a US Army Nike Missile Technician. From Idaho, he was assigned to Ft. Bliss, Texas. On March 2, 1959 - was traveling back to Base after a Leave, on State Route 14. The time was 2:00 AM. PFC Irwin noticed a "bright light" up ahead of his car. The brightness was such that it illuminated the surrounding countryside. Irwin noted the Object begin to descend rapidly and apparently "land or crash". He immediately went to investigate, thinking he had just witnessed a plane crash. Irwin took a piece of paper and wrote the following note:
"HAVE GONE TO INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE PLANE CRASH. PLEASE CALL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS".
Irwin attached the note to his car steering wheel. Irwin next retrieved some boot Polish and wrote the word "STOP" on the side of his vehicle closest to the road. He took off in the direction of the "light". 30 minutes later, a Game Warden drove by and checked the car. Reading the note, he looked around. No sign of either the "Light" nor Irwin was seen. The Warden drove to The Cedar County Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff had no reports of plane crashes in the vicinity. Hours later, a passing car found an unconscious PFC Irwin laying on the side of the road, in the general vicinity of his parked car. He was taken to Cedar City Hospital. He remained unconscious for a period of 23 hours. Doctors could find no outward trauma or cause for his condition. When he awoke, the first thing Irwin said was "Was there any survivors " Obviously, the Doctors had more clue as to what he was talking about. Irwin related his "encounter", stating he had approached a "bright light". Then he had no further recollections as to what happened to him. He appeared in an agitated state when speaking about his encounter. Further, Irwin continued to ask about his missing coat, saying that "something important was inside". Turned over to the Army, Irwin was placed into Psychological Evaluation (due to the nature of his occupation as a Nike Technician). He continued with his story (unchanging). He still had an unusual attachment for his "missing" jacket. Within a week, Irwin turned up AGAIN in Cedar City Hospital (now Absent Without Leave). He had no recollection as to how he got to the Hospital from Ft. Bliss, Texas! Further, he had possession of his "jacket". Nurses said the Military issue Field Jacket appeared "burned". While waiting to see a Doctor, Irwin vanished from the Receiving Room. He has never been seen since!
