A rather good Horror flick, 1966s ‘’The Plague of Zombies’’ is one of Hammer Studios first and only ventures into the Zombie genre (years before even George Romero). Well filmed and acting, it is also a bit of a take from Bela Lugosi’s 1932 flick ‘’White Zombie’’ (but that’s okay too). Set in the mid-19th Century in a Cornish Village which supplies it’s men to a local Tin Mine, the Town wealth is generated from it’s local Squire (Nobility). Having been ‘’abroad’’ from many years, His return marks a series of strange and unexplained deaths in the Town. Worse, bodies that are buried – seem to vanish when exhumed by a pair of Doctors (later), trying to find the cause of the weird deaths (plague?). We learn that The Squire’s time abroad was in Haiti. As such, He mastered the Folk Magic of Voodoo and is turning The Town’s Men into REAL Undead (to compel them to work for free in His Tin Mine). Each ‘’Soul Essence’’ is transferred to a small icon and kept in a miniature coffin. After The Squire is found out, He tries t use His creepy (eyeless) Army, but after His Voodoo fetishes are burned, so too does His Undead Army go – up in smoke. As stated ‘’Plague of Zombies’’ is a-typical late 1960s Horror fare – especially from Hammer Studios, but all that taken in – it still is a fairly entertaining Horror-Fantasy flick.
