Some Scholars cite that The Ordeal in reality was an early form of Water Torture, such as Dunking. But some point to the Ritual by which a suspected Wife was restrained by rope and forced to drink a ''toxic fluid'', prepared by a Priest. Pouring the concoction into the open mouth, (over and over) – the stomach would naturally swell. IF it did not burst, and She vomited up the fluid – She was innocent.
