Classic 1957 American ''B''-Movie fare, ''The Monster That Challenged The World'' is a Black and White Sci-Fi/Horror Feature was written by David Duncan who would later also produce the classic ''The Time Machine'' (1960) and later ''Fantastic Voyage'' (1966) – both long established pieces of Classic Film History. This film, His first foray was a noble attempt to cash in on the then very popular ''B''-Movie Drive In crowds that clamored in The US for Monsters and Atomic Bombs.
Set in California (US), an underwater seismic event releases long dormant (and prehistoric) Giant Mollusks. Now free, the massive monsters make quick work of several off course US Navy Parachutist's during a training jump. Searching for survivors underwater, a giant egg is found and taken back to a Lab for study (big mistake).
Not monitoring the Lab temperature, the egg hatches a Mollusk which grows at an incredible rate. Escaping His prison, the Creature makes His (or Her) way into the Sewers (of course). After a brief chase through such, it is determined that The Mollusks don't do well in freezing cold. Blasting the Beast (now around 10-feet tall), with CO2 – this slows it down enough to get another blasting by US Naval machine guns. It is assumed the ''other'' Creatures will be dealt with the same way – but no sequels were ever made. Although ''The Monster That Challenged The World'' is very method (as were most such films of the Era), it features above average special effects (which makes up for much).
