Located near Lincolnshire, England is a now defunct and decommissioned Royal Air Force Base, known as Metheringham. A Bombing Squadron Base in 1943 (World War II), it would close to Service in 1946. Although long abandoned, apparently not ‘’everyone’’ left. Which leads us to the quaint Ghost Story known as The ‘’Legend of The Metheringham Lass’’. As a War Monument, some visit the Old RAF Airfield Memorial, located near the still existing long concrete runways. As the tale has been told, when a Car approaches the Airfield Memorial, a ‘’young woman is seen, often running up to a vehicle’’. The ‘’girl’’ wears an ‘’old leather RAF Flight Jacket, with patches clearly visible’’. The ‘’distraught girl’’ cries that ‘’Her boyfriend was hurt in a motorcycle accident up the road’’ and ‘’needs help’’. When One gets out of their Car to investigate, The Girl instantly vanishes. The only thing left is the odor of ‘’lavender and rotting flesh’’.
As it so happens, during The War, a young RAF Airman was injured and killed in an off-Base motorcycle accident. His girlfriend was so despondent – coming to The Base everyday, mourning Her ‘’lost love’’. It was further said even after The Base closed, She spent the rest of Her life coming to visit – even up to Her death as an old woman. Apparently, ‘’She’’ still comes to seek help for Her ‘’Love’’. Another ‘’version’’ of ‘’The Lass’’, is that BOTH were killed in the accident and ‘’She’’ is seeking help – unaware that She is ‘’dead’’.
