Popular in the 12th/13th Century, (more so in England) - The ''Mask of Infamy'' was used as a form of Punishment/Torture. Often used to shame and ridicule an Offender, the Masks would be made of wood or metal. It's shape and design was given to mimic a particular animal or exaggerated facial expression. If a Person was given to slovenly appearance and behavior, a Pig's Head would be used. Perhaps one spoke against Authority or worse The Church! A Mule or Donkey Head could be employed. The masks were made specifically smaller and tighter, often with ball-gags built in (to silence speech and screams). Often the victim was chained to a Public wall or post - perhaps for days. Food and drink was impossible.
