Long a ‘’Mystery’’, the 1957 ‘’discovery’’ of a Norse-Era (9th Century AD) Coin in Brooklin, Maine – was nicknamed The ‘’Maine Penny’’. The unusual coin was said to ‘’prove’’ that Norse ‘’Explorers’’ discovered North America, long before the accepted dates of Spanish Expeditions, dating to the late 15th Century. The coin was debated by Historians due to lack of proof of just ‘’where’’ The Coin was generated (in short, no photographic or related evidence establish that The Coin wasn’t just ‘’dropped’’ into a hole!) Making International News, The ‘’Maine Penny’’ (so named for it’s size in relation to the American coinage), was donated by The Family of it’s discoverer in 1974 to The State Museum of Maine. Not a common display piece, The Coin and it’s unusual Tale – are shown occasionally.
