An early Western printed volume dealing with esoteric Folk Magic – ''The Magus'' was ''published'' (privately in 1801) by Francis Barrett in England. Most argue though – the book is actually a Grimoire and one that is a compilation of many earlier (and quite ancient) ones. The Magus (by which it's title is a reference to ancient Magicians and Priests known as ''Magi'') – outlines various uses for Herbs their ''invocation'' (needed for casting both ''healing'' and ''cursing'' Spells). The Magus also outlines the ''History'' of (then) known Demons and their influences on Humanity.
