Long before Bigfoot was a craze in American Cryptid studies and Myths, there was The Jersey Devil. Considered the first true American Myth it is also part Urban Legend. The stories go from early UFO and Extraterrestrial contact, to the Supernatural and Occult. Pretty much whatever speculation is popular at the time The Jersey Devil is given some part of it. The Legend is also considered the most hoaxed myth ever (even outstripping alleged Bigfoot Footprints ). The Jersey Devil is a strange Hybrid beast said to live in The Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey (US). The Pine Barrens is a Region of extremely dense forest land that encompassed the majority of Southern New Jersey. It is said that some parts of The Pine Barrens are so full of trees (triple canopy) that sunlight has NEVER shone through in hundred of thousands of years. Into this Region out creature was born (more or less). Part Kangaroo, Part Bat, Part Horse and Human, The Jersey Devil is capable of flight (via wings). It has a loud blood-curdling scream (that can be heard for miles). The most popular of The Jersey Devil's origin stories goes as such. Deborah Leeds was a Colonial woman who lived in New Jersey (1736). She had 12 children and found that she was pregnant for a 13th time. She joked that this one would be The Devil . On a stormy night, she gave birth to the deformed monstrosity that would become The Jersey Devil. Since that time, many people (some quite famous) have reported seeing The Jersey Devil. The sighting come in flaps or every other 10 years it seems. The Devil was particularly active in the early 20th Century (attacking small towns and even automobiles). There has been no provable photographic evidence of The Jersey Devil (or body or bones for that matter). As stated, many fake Devil's have been advanced. The last known sighting (or hearing) of a Jersey devil was around 2001.
