The ''Holy Nails''

A part of what was considered The ‘’True Cross’’ (more on that later), The ‘’Holy Nails’’ are said to be the very ones used to suspend Jesus Christ upon His execution Cross in 33 AD. As we have seen with the Execution Method known as ‘’Crucifixion’’, The Convicted was literally nailed to a Cross of wood and left to hang. Death followed from a wide variety of medical causes, with Cardiac Arrest being the most probable. When Christ died, little is known of what happened to His execution Cross – until it was supposedly discovered by Emperess Helena (Mother of Constantine of Rome). Helena’s expedition not only recovered The ‘’True Cross’’, but the nails used. These were also presented to Her Son. Many theories were advanced as to what happened next. Some cite that, eventually – The Holy Nails (as they became known), being made of crude Iron – were shaved into fragments and given as Holy Relics. MANY European Kings and Queens claimed fragments for Their personal Relic Collection. But as we have seen in The Middle Ages, the selling of ‘’faked’’ Relics was a very popular vocation. With many Cathedrals and Churches claiming (in many cases) complete nails purported to be ‘’Holy Nails’’, the exact one which would be considered real will probably never be known. Some cited that the original Nails were lost after the Fall of Constantinople in the 15^th Century AD.
